I'll probably get into trouble for this, but here goes...
A mischievous dilemma has been floated by the BBC in the wake of the the pope's recent apology for his ill-advised comments about Islam. It goes like this:
If the pope's infallible, how can he make a mistake?
Wouldn't it be interesting to explore ideas for a new positioning for The Pope, seeing as his incumbent 'Infallible Leader' role seems a bit too demanding to live up to these days.
So the question is, what do you think the ingredients of the refreshed Pope brand should be if he is to regain his once-unchallenged credibility?
Here's my starter for 10:
The people's Pope. Where the Pope encourages an organisational shift away from his top-down, bureaucratic approach to religion towards a more social, collaborative conversation about beliefs, moral codes and all that. Repositioning Popey as the people's representative / mouthpiece to God, rather than vice versa. He could start blogging and everything.
Any better ideas?
Reading through what I've written again, I'm a bit worried my idea could have the pope behaving like a trade union leader. The Bob Crow of Catholicism. There's a scary thought.
Does Bob Crow have a blog? Perhaps he should get one.
